Dr. Sara Koenig is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at University of New Mexico School of Medicine and has served as Medical Director of UNM Hospital Laboratory and UNMH Blood and Tissue Bank since 2011. In addition, Dr. Koenig is an Associate Medical Director for United Blood Services New Mexico. Originally from Massachusetts, Dr. Koenig received her B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College and her Doctorate of Medicine from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in Clinical Pathology at Boston Medical Center and returned to UNC- Chapel Hill for fellowship training in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine. Dr. Koenig is pursuing her Masters of Business and is a member of the class of 2016 cohort at the Anderson School of Business in the Executive MBA program. Dr. Koenig’s areas of clinical expertise include Patient-Centered Blood Management, Apheresis Therapy and Adverse Effects of Transfusion. Dr. Koenig’s active research is primarily focused on the role of laboratory diagnostic testing in providing low-cost, high-value patient care. Dr. Koenig is extensively involved in Quality, both within UNM Hospital and TriCore Reference Laboratories. Over her tenure as Medical Director, the UNM Hospital Laboratory has achieved dramatic improvement in performance on national accrediting agency inspections, patient safety metrics and clinician satisfaction. In addition to her clinical and administrative duties, Dr. Koenig educates medical students, residents and fellows, laboratory technologists and hospital staff and has presented nationally on the use of electronic media in medical education. She was awarded the Pathology Resident Educator of the Year award in 2012, and is an enthusiastic mentor to students and residents, sending several trainees per year to present abstracts at national scientific meetings.
