Introduction to Lean/House of Lean
This session will introduce the principles and concepts of Lean. Learnings will include history, definitions of waste and value, attributes of Lean organization, and the role of a Lean thinker. Lastly the session discusses the strategic process and introduces the class to the A3 thinking and problem solving. This session lays the foundation for rest of the program by introducing the “House of Lean”.
Measurements and Scorecards
This session will introduce the principles and concepts of data, measurements, and the application of scorecards. It is important to measure current business process performance so that when improvements are made, the gains can be measured and quantified.
Waste Identification and Elimination
This session will provide an in depth understanding of value added activities and non-value added activities (waste). Learnings will include understanding value from a customer perspective, recognizing the 7 types of waste, and understanding how to manage required waste. A fun simulation will be used to reinforce learnings.
Process Flow & Mapping Techniques
This session will introduce the concept of a business work process, process step, process flow and effective ways to optimize flow. Next, various process mapping techniques will be introduced. Each of these mapping techniques will provide a unique perspective of the process steps and associated process flow. Visualizing the process will easily uncover waste, areas for improvement, and enable process improvement.
This session will introduce a set of techniques for structured problem solving. Learnings will include 5 why’s, fishbone, and practical problem solving. Structure problem solving provides a methodology to identify and correct a problem’s root cause instead of treating the symptom.
This session will introduce methodologies for the daily sustainment of lean focusing on leadership behaviors. The methodologies provide a disciplined structure for a lean leader to identify new improvement opportunities and sustain long term gains in a business process. Lack of personal commitment and discipline is the leading cause for process failure.
This session will introduce the concepts of standard work and visual management. These techniques enable businesses to document and control processes for long term sustainment and improvement. Mechanisms like standard work must be in place to sustain long term gains in a business process.
5S and Course Wrap Up
This session will introduce 5S as a lean methodology to eliminate waste and organize a work space. Learnings will include detailed descriptions of the 5S’s (Sort, Store, Sweep, Standardize, Sustain). Leaning examples will include 5S application in the factory, office, and home settings.
